Cerakote

Cerakote is a polymer ceramic coating. Applied to the exterior of metal, plastic, wood, or polymer surfaces. Only one color to each surface. Choose one color or additional colors for separate parts of your firearm. This product cannot be layered. (For example, no camo). This service takes usually less than 2 weeks.

Duracoat

Duracoat is an air dry process. Applied to exterior metal, synthetic, and wood. Custom mixed in any color.  Can also be layered for a camo effect. Also, finishes come in matte or semi-gloss sheen. Because this is an air dry product, it takes up to a month to fully cure. Cerakote and Duracoat are both very durable for rust prevention.  More on Duracoat

NOTE: Our Duracoat finisher is not taking on new projects at this time.

Wood Finishes

Wood finishes for gun stocks, forends, and hand gun grips. No matter if you restore old wood to like new, or change new wood to a desired finish. We also correct checkering. And repair cracked gun stocks and forends.

Rebluing, Bluing techniques

Hot bluing is applied by dipping steel into an acid solution. Which is then heated to boiling. It’s the most permanent bluing for rust protection. It’s similar to standard factory bluing.

Cold bluing is the use of over the counter products.  For cosmetic touch-ups.

Fire bluing or Flame bluing is the process of heating steel. As a result, changes the color to a deep blue color finish.

Rust bluing and Fume bluing is an old practice. Although, it is safe method for keeping vintage guns from rusting. It isn’t used much today.

NOTE: Bluing is not a permanent rust preventative. If a gun already shows signs of rust, it will require regular maintenance after bluing.

However, if you still can’t decide the type of finish you need… Our gunsmith, as well as, our trusted local finisher can help. Whether you want a custom new gun, or refinish an old one. See us for all your finishing needs.

When bringing your firearm to The Gun Doctor for finish work, please bring the entire gun. In most cases, bringing in the whole gun will ensure parts fit after Cerakote and Duracoat is applied.
